Over 250 girls, boys, and parents attended to hear the message that FGM is dangerous and unnecessary. We had an educational film presented by the SAFE Charity, after which we split the group into boys and girls.
The girls stayed in church and heard from two inspirational lady speakers. The boys moved to under a tree (where in Maasai culture all important decisions are taken – a strong statement of the strength of messages) and were spoken to by two teachers Kipailoi Ole Letura and Davy Parosei as well as the pastor, two tribal chiefs, a father who had refused to cut his 3 daughters and the guys again from SAFE.
The messages really seemed to hit home – there is still a place for a right of passage ceremony, but without the cutting. This day will undoubtedly save lives – girls can die from the cutting ceremony and from difficult resultant childbirths.
The day finished with a meal, prepared by the ladies from our Entito Women’s Empowerment Centre, hosted at local teacher, Regina Njuguna’s, house.
A true example of what can be achieved when groups from different tribes, villages, points of view, and even countries collaborate in a powerful but friendly way.
