We’re assisting additional Primary School which is in a remote location in the Masai Mara

  • Assisting Leshuta Primary School - Choice Through Education

The school is LESHUTA PRIMARY SCHOOL

There are 960 students in the school with 50-60 children in a classroom in some years.

We became aware of this school during a recent visit to Kenya when I met up with one of our previously sponsored students who is a teacher at the school.

David was found at Nkineji Primary school by Maywood Rotary (New Jersey USA) who we have partnered with for many years.

He was there tears rolling down with a teacher. The teacher later explained to us that he had stayed home for four years since finishing Primary School as his parents could not afford to pay for his education however even after four years he was still highly motivated and hoping to join high school.

Due to his good results, he has been offered a place at Narok Boys High School, a very good school.

Maywood Rotary paid for his high school fee and he was admitted.

I first met David a couple of years after he had graduated from High School when he was volunteering back at Nkineji School where we still sponsor students and other projects now.

David really wanted to be a Primary School Teacher but once again could not afford to go to college.

Through one of our sponsors CTE were able to find his college fees and he returned each holiday work free of charge at the school and assisted us greatly with the building projects we were undertaking at Nkineji at the time.

He has always been an amazing role model for the younger boys.

Following his qualification he once again returned to Nkineji to give back again working as a much-needed teacher on a very, very low wage funded by the parents to supplement the shortage of government-paid teachers.

Finding teachers with David’s skills and passion in the Mara is very difficult as the living conditions are harsh and housing extremely poor.

We were not surprised to learn that a couple of years later he was snapped up by the government and placed on a full contract with better wages.

The only downside was that he was to be located to a school with much greater need than Nkineji. The school were grateful for all he had done for them and whilst they were sorry to see him go they gave him their blessing.

He is now self-sufficient and will be able to afford his own children in due course.

Without the support of Maywood Rotary and CTE his only choice would have been to work locally looking after the cows and goats.

I know that he works extremely hard at his school and is very well respected by students and teachers a like.

When I met with him I asked how, if we could raise funds we could assist his school in some small way.

His first request was for desks as in some classes children had to stand for hours on end means they cannot concentrate.

As the school is in such a remote location I was unable to visit last time but will be when I am next in Kenya.

Although they are sitting 4-5 desks at present which must make it almost impossible to work these desks for the lower grade cost £76 each and due to the metal frames last for many years. That’s only £25.33 per child seat/desk!

We were able to buy these first 12 due to the generous donations from two sponsors who want to remain anonymous.

If you would like to help us provide some more much-needed desks please get in touch.

Maybe your child’s class would be interested in organising a fund raising project at school to help buy desk.
