LET’S FILL THESE EMPTY CLASSROOMS WITH DESKS AT LESHUTA PRIMARY SCHOOL

We are involved because one of our previously sponsored students, David, who we educated and trained to be a teacher, is working there and has been for a number of years. It’s in a very rural, economically poor location and David is working really hard to make a difference at the school.

The typical class sizes are between 120 to 130!

Last year they finally received some new classes from the Government for Grades 7, 8 and 9 which is the Junior High School. Albeit that we are working to secure more teachers for the school they are also fortunate to have enough teachers for those Grades which is very unusual.

Unfortunately, the Government doesn’t fund furniture and therefore they have classrooms and teachers, but they have nowhere for the students to sit so they’re sitting 2 students per chair and small desk at the moment, with others standing at the back of the room trying to study for 10 hours a day.

CTE funded the manufacture of some desks for them earlier in the year, and now we’re trying to raise money for another 60 desks so that they can split one of the senior classes into two to utilise one of the classrooms that is currently standing empty, to reduce the class sizes to just 60! This will at least give the children a chance of learning something in class, and at this critical time, their education ahead of their National Examinations at the end of Grade 9.

They require individual locker style desks as they are senior students and they need the single desks where they can lock their books in them. We supply the better quality metal frame desks with metal chairs, as shown in the photographs below, as they last a lot longer.

For Ilpoori Comprehensive School, we also supplied new desks earlier in the year. Due to the enormous success and all the efforts by the Head Master, teaching staff, Board of Management and parents, the school is expanding and in January they have an additional 20 students joining Grades 7, 8 and 9. This is a significant achievement for this, also rural, school and will help financially towards “balancing the books”. This success is due to the quality of teaching and management, plus the facilities between us we’ve been able to provide which is attracting more students.

WE NEED MORE DESKS LIKE THESE!

So that’s 80 desks and chairs we need, but we are CTE and we love a challenge so this year’s festive challenge we are going to try to raise enough money to buy 100 desks and chairs!

Our Donate a Desk for Christmas – DD4C is therefore once again a big challenge as we need to raise the money to have 100 desks and chairs manufactured and delivered for the start of the next academic year in January.

Our sponsors have already, collectively committed to buying the first 38 desks, so we are off and running with only 62 to go!
