Reson’s Story

This is Reson, who is 14 and in Grade 7 at Leshuta Comprehensive School. This is the first of three years at Junior High School. Both of her parents are alcoholics, and as she is now seen by some as being of marrying age, she was rescued by David, who is one of our former sponsored students who has gone on to become a superb, well-respected teacher. David, whose salary is small, is trying to pay Reson’s school fees so that she does not have to go home, where she will have to endure FGM and then be sold into marriage.

She is so happy to be at Leshuta, is bright, very well-mannered, and hard-working. In the holidays, she can stay with her grandmother far from her parents and attend our holiday camp for the rescued girls. Before I left, I promised Reson that I would find her a sponsor so that she could stay in school and not have to return to her parents and face FGM followed by marriage.
